Gua sha has been a cornerstone of traditional Chinese medicine for over 2,000 years — and it's having its long-overdue moment in modern skincare. This ancient facial massage technique uses a smooth stone tool to sculpt, de-puff, and lift the face while boosting circulation and promoting lymphatic drainage. Here's everything you need to know to do it right.
What Is Gua Sha?
"Gua sha" translates to "scraping" — a technique that involves pressing a flat, smooth-edged tool against the skin and gliding it in specific patterns. On the face, the pressure is much lighter than traditional body gua sha, creating a relaxing massage that works with your facial anatomy to lift and define.
Traditional gua sha tools are made from jade, rose quartz, or bian stone — each believed to carry different healing properties. Rose quartz is the most popular for facial use due to its smooth surface and cooling feel.
Benefits of Facial Gua Sha
- Reduces puffiness — stimulates lymphatic drainage to move excess fluid away from the face
- Sculpts and defines — repeated use tones facial muscles for a lifted, chiseled appearance
- Improves circulation — brings fresh blood to the surface for a natural, lasting flush of color
- Relieves tension — releases tight jaw muscles (masseter), forehead tension, and neck soreness
- Enhances product absorption — using gua sha after serum application pushes it deeper into the skin
- Promotes relaxation — the ritual itself is deeply calming, reducing cortisol levels that drive skin inflammation
What You Need Before You Start
- A clean face
- A facial oil or serum (slip is essential — never use gua sha on dry skin)
- Your gua sha tool — jade or rose quartz work beautifully
- Optional: refrigerate your tool for 15 minutes beforehand for extra de-puffing
Step-by-Step Gua Sha Tutorial
Perform each stroke 3–5 times. Always work upward and outward — against gravity, toward the ears and hairline. Use light-to-medium pressure. Never drag on dry skin.
Step 1: Neck (Always Start Here)
Begin at the collarbone and sweep upward along the sides of the neck toward the jaw. This "opens" the lymph nodes so they can receive drainage from the rest of your massage. Don't skip this step — it makes everything else more effective.
Step 2: Jawline and Chin
Starting at the center of the chin, sweep outward along the jawline toward the ear. Press firmly enough to feel resistance but not pain. This stroke defines the jaw and drains fluid that collects along the jaw and neck.
Step 3: Cheeks
Place the tool flat against your cheek and sweep outward and upward toward the temple. Repeat across the whole cheek. This lifts the cheekbones and moves fluid toward the lymph nodes near the ear.
Step 4: Under-Eye Area
Switch to the smaller curved edge. Very gently glide under the eye from the inner corner toward the temple. Use almost no pressure here — the under-eye skin is the thinnest on the face. This movement reduces puffiness and dark circles caused by poor drainage.
Step 5: Forehead
Start at the center of the brow and sweep up and outward toward the hairline. Move across the entire forehead. Finish by gliding from the center of the forehead straight up and over the scalp — this releases tension and activates relaxation.
Step 6: Finish on the Neck Again
Complete your routine with another round of neck strokes to flush everything you've moved toward the lymph nodes at your collarbone. This is the final drainage step that makes gua sha so effective for de-puffing.
How Often Should You Do Gua Sha?
For best results, aim for 3–5 sessions per week. Even 5 minutes in the morning makes a visible difference in puffiness and skin tone. Many people notice their face looks noticeably more sculpted and awake within 2–3 weeks of consistent practice.
Gua Sha Tips for Beginners
- Never use on broken skin, active acne, or sunburned skin
- Clean your tool with warm soapy water after each use
- Store in a soft pouch to protect the stone
- Light redness (erythema) is normal and fades quickly — it means blood is circulating
- Pair with your favorite serum or facial oil for maximum glide and absorption
